Rugs need a specialist assessment

A rug may contain wool, cotton, synthetic fibres, viscose or a mixture of materials. The face fibre is only part of the decision: dyes, foundation yarns, backing adhesives, fringes, pre-existing damage and previous cleaning attempts can all affect what is safe and what result is realistic.

That is why every rug is assessed individually. The aim is to select an appropriate process, explain any risks before work begins and avoid treating a valuable textile as though it were simply a small fitted carpet.

Hands-on specialist rug-cleaning training

Danny Murray completed a two-day course and study in Hands On Rug Cleaning on 13 and 14 March 2024 at Alltec Network, with respected industry instructor Paul Pearce. The training covered the practical decisions involved in inspecting and safely treating different rugs rather than applying one standard process to every item.

How a rug is assessed

• Fibre and construction are checked using the label and physical characteristics.
• Dyes and vulnerable areas are considered before moisture or cleaning products are introduced.
• Dry soil, hair, staining, odour, fringe condition and previous damage are recorded.
• A suitable rinse, extraction or low-moisture approach is selected where appropriate.
• Drying requirements and realistic limitations are explained before cleaning.

No responsible cleaner can promise that every stain, odour or previous DIY-treatment mark will disappear. Permanent colour loss, dye migration, weakened fibres, browning or backing damage may remain even after removable soil has been safely cleaned.

Wool, cotton, synthetic and mixed-fibre rugs

Suitable modern synthetic rugs are often robust, but their backing and construction still matter. Wool requires controlled chemistry and careful moisture management. Cotton can lose stability or show colour movement, while viscose and some designer fibres may need an especially cautious approach. Mixed-fibre rugs are assessed according to the most sensitive component rather than the strongest one.

If the composition label is missing, photographs can provide useful initial information, but the final decision may require inspection. We will not describe an unknown rug as safely cleanable until the material and risks have been considered.
