Can you clean a bouclé sofa? Polyester sofa cleaning in Edinburgh

By Danny Murray ·

One of the questions we are asked regularly is: can a bouclé sofa be professionally cleaned? In many cases, yes—but “bouclé” describes the looped style and texture of the material, not the fibre it is made from. The fibre composition, backing, fillings, dyes and construction still need to be identified and tested before choosing a cleaning method.

This light-coloured bouclé sofa in Edinburgh was upholstered in polyester. After inspection and testing, we selected detailed dry-soil removal, controlled agitation and water extraction as the appropriate process for this particular sofa.

Bouclé is a fabric style—not a fibre type

Bouclé gets its distinctive appearance from looped or curled yarns. Those yarns may be made from polyester, wool, cotton, viscose or a blend. That distinction matters because two sofas that both look like bouclé can respond very differently to moisture, agitation and cleaning products.

For this Edinburgh sofa, the confirmed polyester composition gave us important information about absorbency, soil release and the method that could be considered after testing. We never assume that the same process is suitable for every bouclé upholstery fabric.

Why bouclé upholstery needs detailed vacuuming

The textured loops can hold crumbs, hair, dust and other dry particles below the visible surface. Thorough vacuuming is therefore an important first stage of professional bouclé sofa cleaning. Applying moisture before removing as much dry soil as possible can make the remaining clean more difficult.

Agitation and water extraction for this polyester sofa

After vacuuming and pre-treatment, the upholstery needed careful agitation to work the cleaning solution through the uneven texture and loosen attached soil. Controlled water extraction was then used to rinse and remove the suspended contamination rather than leaving it within the loops.

Water extraction was the best method for this particular polyester bouclé sofa after inspection and testing. That is not a blanket recommendation for every bouclé fabric: natural fibres, unstable dyes, sensitive backings or unusual fillings may require a more controlled or lower-moisture approach.
